FALLS VILLAGE — A team of five students from Housatonic Valley Regional High School of Falls Village won third place at the 28th annual Connecticut High School Geography Challenge, held May 22 at Central Connecticut State University in New Britain.

A student team from Fairfield Warde High School of Fairfield won this year’s statewide, interscholastic, academic team competition in geography. A team from Lyme-Old Lyme High School finished second.
Only 6 points separated the top three teams. The Housatonic Valley Regional High School team included Sasha Allen, Soren Clulow, Shane Stampfle, Marijke Stiffler, and Keaeton Terrall, and their teacher was HVRHS social studies teacher Peter Vermilyea.
Eighteen high school teams from around Connecticut competed in events focused on this year’s theme of “Global Health and Disease.”
In the morning, students toured the CCSU campus in a modified orienteering event, read traditional maps and online GIS information in the map reading activity, and hunted for a gang of spies in a virtual scavenger hunt problem-solving activity.
