LITCHFIELD — Litchfield Park and Recreation held its first Father of the Year Contest, and the winners have been announced. Frank Van Ormer won the Father of Young Children award, and Steve Malo won the Father of Older Children award.
Families were asked to send an essay about their dad, saying why he should be the Father of the Year.
Frank Van Ormer won a prize from Sportsmen’s and a bottle of wine from the Village Wine Cellar.
Van Ormer’s sons Joseph, 11, Andrew, 9, Thomas, 7, and Daniel, 3, wrote:
“Our Dad is the best Dad ever! He is our distance learning teacher, Cub Scout leader, T-ball coach, runs the snack shack at all of our baseball games. Ye takes us kayaking, hiking, biking, camping, skiing and on all kinds of adventures. He built us the tree fort of our dreams and builds us campfires in the backyard!
When he isn’t taking care of us and supporting our activities, he works as an EMT and volunteers as a firefighter and an EMT. He also volunteers for Tri-Town Little League, Litchfield Community Center, Litchfield County Dispatch, Cub Scout Pack 31, and is on the board of Litchfield Volunteer Ambulance. Even when he comes home from work and is exhausted, he rests for 15 minutes and then takes us to the lake to swim, to community field to practice baseball, on walks and bike rides around town.
Our Dad has the biggest heart ever! He loves our Mom and us boys so much that he would do anything for us and for others (including animals)! So far this spring, he has rescued 2 frogs from the drain pipe in the ice rink behind Town Hall and he stopped by West Cemetery to help a turtle cross the road! He takes us to church every Sunday, reads to us, teaches us about life, fixes our scrapes and bruises and always makes sure to tell us he loves us!
Please choose our Dad, because he deserves it! We love him so much!”
Molly Malo wrote a letter on behalf of her Dad, Steve Malo. He won a prize from True Value, and a bottle of wine from the Village Wine Cellar:
“Our dad plays the guitar and rides an orange scooter around town. If you couldn't already tell, his favorite color is orange. Our dad also loves Facebook. He could scroll for hours. He is also a huge Boston Red Sox and Bruins fan. My dad's favorite food is fish and chips from a restaurant in Rhode Island. He is the griller at every family gathering and makes our favorite salmon. Our dad is addicted to hoodies, ties, hats, and shoes, his closet is full of them. It's very funny when he tries to sneak in a new hat without our mom noticing!
We are very proud of our dad for being elected to the Board of Education last November. He has gotten a lot of support throughout the town! Overall our dad is an amazing person that deserves the recognition of Father of the Year.”
