SHARON — Steeples of Litchfield County, a new exhibition of sketches by Steven M. Goldberg, FAIA, at the Sharon Historical Society and Museum will open Saturday, Jan. 25 and remain on view through Saturday, April 25. This unique exhibition explores the beauty and variations of historical ecclesiastical architecture in northwestern Connecticut. Curated in partnership with master draftsman and architect, Steven M. Goldberg, FAIA, the exhibition will explore the many different architectural components and steeple archetypes of Litchfield County’s churches.
After graduating from the University of Pennsylvania in 1965, Goldberg travelled extensively across Europe and the Middle East sketching masterpieces of religious architecture before settling in Litchfield County in 1982. Over the past five years he has produced architectural illustrations of over twenty churches across the Northwest Corner and this exhibition serves as a celebration of the masterworks located only a few miles from our homes.
This reconsideration of the enduring religious and cultural presence of Litchfield County’s churches will showcase Goldberg’s highly detailed illustrations in conjunction with historical photographs and other related objects from the permanent collections of the Sharon Historical Society & Museum.
Co-curators Alexander Ellis and Steven Goldberg will give a free public opening lecture about the exhibit from 2-3 p.m on Jan. 25. The lecture will be at Sharon Congregational Church, 25 Main St. Park in the back of the church. Overflow parking is available directly across the street at the Sharon Historical Society & Museum, 18 Main St.
