Kent library presents ‘Write the First Draft’ two-part workshop

Troncoso

KENT – The Kent Memorial Library will offer a two-session writing workshop, Write The First Draft, to the KML community, presented by Sergio Troncoso, Oct. 29 and Nov. 5, 7-9 p.m.

Troncoso will lead a two-session writing workshop meant to generate new fiction work from all workshop participants. In the first two-hour session, Troncoso will discuss structuring stories and how to improve the craft of writing over the long-term. He will pass out a few exercises to be done in class and one exercise to launch you into a first draft of a short story or perhaps the beginning of a novel. In the second two-hour session, workshop participants will share parts of their work and receive immediate responses and comments from Sergio and the entire class.

The two-session writing workshop is for 12 participants.

Troncoso is author of “A Peculiar Kind of Immigrant’s Son”, a collection of linked short stories, which Luis Alberto Urrea called “a world-class collection.”

The book won the Kay Cattarulla Award for Best Short Story and the International Latino Book Award for Best Collection of Short Stories. Troncoso also wrote “From This Wicked Patch of Dust,” which Kirkus Reviews named one of the best books of 2012 in a starred review. The novel won the Southwest Book Award.

Troncoso wrote “Crossing Borders: Personal Essays”, winner of the Bronze Award for Essays from Foreword Reviews; and “The Nature of Truth”, hailed by the Chicago Tribune as “impressively lucid.”

He is president of the Texas Institute of Letters and a resident faculty member of the Yale Writers' Workshop.

The two workshops will be held on Zoom and are free and open to the public. This two-part workshop is for 12 participants. Register to receive login information. Only serious registrants only.
